Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother Andre have tragically died in a car crash in northwestern Spain, sparking an outpouring of emotion across the football world. Cristiano Ronaldo led heartfelt tributes on Thursday, July 3, writing:

“It doesn’t make any sense. Just now we were together in the national team, just now you were married. To your family, to your wife and children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. R.I.P. Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you.”The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) announced that a minute of silence will be held before all matches this weekend, calling Jota's death “a devastating loss.” Liverpool FC, his club, posted a black-and-white photo with the caption: “Forever in our hearts, Diogo.”  Within hours of the news breaking, flowers were laid outside Anfield in tribute to Jota.

According to Spanish emergency services, the fatal accident occurred near Zamora in the Castilla y León region around 2:30 AM. The A-52 highway crash saw the car veer off-road, overturn, and catch fire. Emergency crews arrived swiftly, but both brothers were declared dead at the scene.

Jota’s death is especially heartbreaking as he had just tied the knot 10 days ago, leaving behind a newlywed wife Rute Cardoso with whom he had three children with. The couple had only recently shared joyous wedding photos.A standout forward for Liverpool and a key player in Portugal’s national squad, Jota was also part of the team that recently won the UEFA Nations League, where Cristiano Ronaldo was his international teammate and captain.

He was a fan favorite both on and off the pitch. Messages of sympathy continue to pour in globally, as football mourns not just a player — but a son, a brother, a father, and a friend taken too soon.

As investigations into the crash continue, fans, teammates, and clubs around the world are grappling with the sudden loss of a rising star whose passion and drive left a lasting impact on and off the pitch
