Court sentence Nigerian gospel singer Oluwatimileyin Ajayi to Death
The High Court in Lafia, Nasarawa State, has sentenced Oluwatimileyin Ajayi to death by hanging for the murder of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Salome Adaidu.
Justice Simon Aboki, who presided over the case, delivered the judgment on Thursday.
The court found Oluwatimileyin Ajayi guilty of killing and dismembering the late Salome Adaidu. He was charged with one count of culpable homicide, contrary to Section 221 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria, which is punishable by death.
Ajayi, who claimed to be a gospel singer, was arrested by the police on Sunday, January 12, near a church in Orozo, with the severed head of Salome Adaidu.
A video that went viral on social media showed a crowd surrounding Ajayi after his arrest, questioning him about the human head found in his possession.
In the video, Ajayi claimed that Salome was his girlfriend and that they had been dating for about a year. However, Salome's family denied any such relationship.
According to the police, Ajayi allegedly murdered Salome when she visited his residence in the Papalana area of New Karshi, located in the Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
During his parade by the police, Ajayi was displayed along with the knife and machetes he allegedly used to commit the crime.Patience Unekwuojo Adaidu, the first child of the Adaidu family, spoke to BBC Pidgin after the court's judgment, saying, “Nothing can bring my sister back, but his [Timileyin’s] death is certain. I am very sure about his death.” She added, “God is in control of everything.”
Before the case went to court, Patience had made it clear that “Timileyin was not her [Salome’s] boyfriend,” and stated that the family did not know him as someone Salome was in a relationship with.
According to Patience, the late Salome had bright plans for her future. Her supervisor at Nicon Insurance had recently enrolled her in an online professional training program that she attended every Saturday.
“The first time they called her for that professional course, she called me, full of excitement. She wasn’t someone who spent money carelessly; she had great plans for her life,” Patience added.
Salome’s mother also spoke to BBC Pidgin, saying, “Salome has been like a husband to me since my husband died. I want justice for my daughter.”
